Counteracting disinformation and increasing digital resilience: conclusions of the meeting
Online meeting of Tech & Society Communication Group

On January 28, 2022, members of the Tech & Society Communication Group met to discuss the role of modern technology in counteracting disinformation and increasing digital resilience.

The speaker was Olga Yurkova, member of the group, journalist, editor, media consultant and co-founder of the StopFake project.

Olga introduced everyone to the key terms related to the topic and noted how to use the terms "fake", "manipulation" and "misinformation". She noted that misinformation is certainly not a new phenomenon, but the technological process makes the creation and distribution of manipulative content much simpler and more effective than before.

According to the speaker, it is possible to algorithmically produce both video and audio - in order to use audiovisual fakes for fraud, and texts - thus inventing any "quotes" and "facts". Therefore, today it is important to have critical thinking and adhere to conscious media consumption. To do this, Olga advised to choose 3 quality media that you trust and focus on, as well as 1 media from the opposite point of view and 1 information resource from another area in order to sometimes go beyond your own information "bubble".

At the end of the event, Olga Yurkova demonstrated tools for verifying facts, photos, videos, texts that anyone can use. The founder of the Tech and Society Communication Group Olena Boytsun moderated the follow-up discussion.
